- Hackers Made Fake WhatsApp To Steal Sensitive Data Of iPhone Users.
It has recently been disclosed that hackers made a fake WhatsApp version to dupe iPhone users and collect their sensitive data. This fake WhatsApp version has been found to be linked to an Italian surveillance firm “Cy4Gate” and was discovered by a cybersecurity research lab at the University of Toronto, Citizen Lab, and Motherboard. As reported by Vice, the cyberattack involves tricking users into installing configuration files or Mobile Device Management (MDM), which are capable of downloading malware in the targeted device. It states that the phishing page with the domain config5-dati[.]com was tricking iPhone users to download the app but was in fact a configuration file for the iPhone.
The page was also designed in a way that it looked similar to an official WhatsApp website with WhatsApp branding and professional graphics. All the information on the phishing site is compiled in Italian. The motherboard utilized data from different cybersecurity vendors and found multiple clusters of domains linked to the one publicly shared. WhatsApp spokesperson responded to the discovery, stating, “To help keep chats safe, we recommend that people download WhatsApp from the app store for their phone's platform. In addition, we may temporarily ban people using modified WhatsApp clients we detect to help encourage people to download WhatsApp from an authoritative source.” The spokesperson further added that “we strongly oppose abuse from spyware companies, regardless of their clientele. Modifying WhatsApp to harm others violates our terms of service. We have and will continue to take action against such abuse, including in court.”
- Now Anti-national Posts on Social Media Can Lead to Passport Non-Approval in Uttarakhand.
Uttarakhand police will from now on maintain track of social media of those frequently posting 'anti-national' posts while verifying their documents for passport and arms license, said Ashok Kumar, police chief of Uttarakhand on Tuesday on the concluding day of the State police officers' conference in Dehradun. "Till now, in cases of any person putting any anti-national posts on social media, the police used to first do his counselling, asking him not to repeat it in future. A case was registered only if it was a very serious case," Kumar said, throwing light on the state police’s current approach on the matter.
"From now onwards, the police would scrutinise the accused person’s social media behaviour to check if he is habitual of putting such anti-national posts. If it is found, then the police would not clear his police verification, needed while applying for passport or arms license," said Kumar. Officials from the department said that the move comes after a supposed 'surge' in such posts and social media accounts. Legal experts termed the move as meddling with fundamental rights of freedom of expression.
- Elon Musk Says That Neuralink Could Start Planting Computer Chips in Humans Brains Within the Year.
SpaceX owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that Neuralink — his brain-computer-interface firm — could begin launching human trials by the end of the year. Musk revealed a timeline in response to another user's request to join human trials for the product, designed to implant artificial intelligence into human brains as well as potentially cure neurological diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. “Neuralink is working super hard to ensure implant safety & is in close communication with the FDA. If things go well, we might be able to do initial human trials later this year,” Musk said on Twitter in response to another user's request to join human trials.
Musk told Clubhouse users Sunday night that Neuralink recently used its nanotechnology to implant a chip into a monkey's brain. The wireless chip allowed the monkey to play video games using only its mind. Musk previously estimated that Neuralink would begin human trials of the technology in the second quarter of 2020, which ultimately failed. Musk has recently tried to recruit for the company on Twitter. "If you've worked on advanced wearables, phones or robots, those skills are needed @neuralink," Musk tweeted on Sunday.

- World's largest E-commerce Website Is Deploying AI Cameras to Surveil Delivery Drivers 100% Of the Time.
Amazon recently began testing AI-equipped cameras in vehicles to monitor contracted delivery drivers while they’re on the job, with the aim of improving safety. Amazon has deployed the cameras in Amazon-branded cargo vans used by a handful of companies that are part of its delivery service partner program, which are largely responsible for last-mile deliveries. The cameras could be rolled out to additional DSPs over time, and Amazon has already distributed an instructional video to DSPs, informing them of how the cameras work. The four-camera system will use machine learning to detect risky behaviors like distracted driving and speeding, and then issue verbal warnings to drivers, the company said.
The camera system, called Driveri, is made by Netradyne, a California-based company that builds tools to help transportation companies "reduce driving incidents and protect against false claims." Amazon claims in the video that Netradyne's cameras "reduce collisions by 1/3 through in-cab warnings," citing studies by First Analysis and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. Karolina Haraldsdottir, a senior manager for last-mile safety at Amazon explains that drivers can only turn the cameras off when the ignition is off and that the side cameras may carry on for up to 20 minutes to record things like "package theft, driver harassment, and collisions from moving vehicles."

- Nuclear-powered Rockets Can Get Crewed Mission to Mars in Just Three Months.
Seattle-based company Ultra Safe Nuclear Technologies (USNC-Tech) has come up with a design of a spacecraft that will use nuclear-powered rockets to shorten the trip that could get humans from Earth to Mars in just three months. NASA’s plan is to get humans to Mars by the year 2035, but there are several challenges to the trip. The biggest being the time it would take to get to the red planet. Currently, NASA’s goal for a one-way trip to Mars is around five to nine months. But switching to a nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) engine does come with its own risks, though USNC-Tech claims to have made it safe for the crew.
One of the main challenges for building an NTP engine is finding uranium fuel that can withstand high temperatures inside a nuclear-thermal engine. However, the company claims to solve the problem by developing a fuel that will be able to work in temperatures as high as over 2,400 degrees Celsius. The fuel incorporates a material known as silicon carbide frequently used in tank armour. It is capable of preventing radioactive products from leaking from the reactor by forming a gas-tight barrier. USNC-Tech is hoping to develop its technology for government agencies like NASA and the Department of Defense, and for the commercial space market. Until the technology is truly tested, it will be some time before astronauts head out to Mars in a rocket-powered by a nuclear-thermal engine.
