  • Apple’s Patent Application Indicated That It Could Have A Solution for Fraying Lightning Cables

Apple has presented a patent application that could stop its lightning cables from fraying so easily. The patent application talks about a cable with ‘variable stiffness' and admits it is well-known that bending of the cable near the termination point where it goes into the phone could cause unwanted strain on wire connections, which could lead to cable failure. Apple notes that increased thickness for strain relief sleeves "may not be desired" in some cases, so it's exploring an alternative approach. Along with making cables thicker overall, it suggests extending the strain relief beyond the two ends.

One way of achieving that, according to the filing, is to achieve varying levels of stiffness across different "longitudinal sections." One section is flexible, another is rigid and a third is somewhere in between. The latter, Apple says, can relieve strain on the ends of the cable. The patent signals that Apple is working towards fixing a long-criticized problem with its charging cables. However, this is just a concept right now and may or may not go into production.

  • Xiaomi’s New Concept Phone Has A Waterfall Display on All Four Edges.

Xiaomi on Friday officially unveiled its first quad-curved waterfall screen concept smartphone on all four edges. This means there will be no port or buttons on any side of the device. Xiaomi says this is intended to “extend the limits of the display to infinity” and enable “a true, port-free unibody design.” The 88-degree hyper quad-curved screen design allows visual interfaces to flow over the phone's surface like water.

"With Xiaomi's new breakthroughs in quad-curved waterfall displays, new possibilities are forged and critical advances are made towards the goal of a truly port-free unibody smartphone," the company said in a statement. Polishing a piece of such hyper-curved glass with a deep 88-degree bend on four sides requires self-developed glass processing equipment, hot bending under 800-degree Celsius elevated temperature and pressure, four other polishing tools, and up to more than ten complex polishing procedures. "This revolutionary design ensures that almost all sides of the phone are covered by the display," the company said.

  • Google Sent One More Warning; Will Delete Play Music Data Later This Month

Google Play Music stopped working at the start of December, calling on users to hop to YouTube Music instead. Since then, the company has been allowing people to download their Play Music library and data or transfer it to YouTube Music. Google originally planned to allow users until the end of 2020 to either transfer that data to YouTube Music utilizing the built-in tool or download an offline copy. That year-end deadline slipped into 2021, but Google is now proceeding with its plans to “delete all of your Google Play Music data.”

Google sent an email to Google Play Music account-holders this week, warning users that their data will be deleted on February 24, 2021. The email acknowledges if users have already transferred to YouTube Music, but notes that you can still transfer again or download your data and library via Google Takeout. The data downloaded via Takeout include purchased/uploaded music, playlists, radio station metadata, and search/playback history.

  • Xiaomi Has Suspended Non-GMS Phones from Downloading Google Services.

Smartphone companies have been launching their devices in China without Google Mobile Services since all Google platforms are banned in the country. However, users were usually able to download them if they were planning to use the phone outside Mainland China or through a VPN. This can no longer be an option for Xiaomi users in China. Support staff for MIUI has announced that starting this month, Mi and Redmi phones, purchased without pre-installed GMS, will no longer be able to freely download them.

The products that will be affected by this move are primarily China-only devices such as the Mi 10 Ultra, the Redmi K30 Ultra, and the Redmi 10X series of powerful cameraphones. Users who want to have GMS are advised to go for third-party services like the CoolAPK platform that allows sideloading apps. Many global fans choose to purchase phones from China and then import them to their home countries, either because of the cheaper cost or because they liked a model that was not available in their region. They still have to rely on other platforms or adopt the non-Google life, something that Huawei is attempting to achieve for the past two years.
