  • Jeff Bezos To Step Down as CEO Of Amazon in Third Quarter.
 

Amazon.com Inc on Tuesday said founder Jeff Bezos would step down as CEO and become executive chairman in the third quarter. In a letter to Amazon employees published Tuesday afternoon, Bezos announced he would transition to the executive-chairman role and focus on new products and early initiatives. "Being the CEO of Amazon is a deep responsibility, and it's consuming," Bezos wrote. "When you have a responsibility like that, it's hard to put attention on anything else."  


Bezos said that while he would still be involved in important initiatives at Amazon, he planned to invest more time in philanthropy. Bezos, who founded the company 27 years ago as an internet bookseller, said in a note to employees posted on Amazon's website, "As Exec Chair I will stay engaged in important Amazon initiatives but also have the time and energy I need to focus on the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, The Washington Post, and my other passions." He added, "I’ve never had more energy, and this isn’t about retiring." Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon Web Services, will replace him. Bezos wrote Jassy would represent an outstanding leader and that he received the Amazon founder's "full confidence."


  • Volkswagen Planning to Challenge Google With Own Autonomous Car Software.

The world's second-largest carmaker Volkswagen plans to develop most of the software needed for autonomous cars in-house, the head of the German carmaker's luxury unit Audi said on Tuesday. The carmaker is not rejecting collaborations in some areas outright, said Markus Duesmann, who on top of running Audi is also on Volkswagen's management board, where he is responsible for research and development. Asked whether Volkswagen was looking to Alphabet's Google as a benchmark in software development, Duesmann said it wanted to be at least on the same level. "We accept the challenge," he added.


Daimler and Volkswagen are working on their own operating systems for autonomous cars. To make sure they have a chance to compete with large tech firms like Apple and Amazon in the area of electric vehicle data. Despite calls to team up with rivals, Volkswagen has so far been planning to go at it alone. "We have a size that makes us want to cooperate with ourselves initially," said Duesmann, adding that Volkswagen is confident it can set new standards in software development. Volkswagen has bundled its software competence into a newly formed unit Car.Software.Org, which employs about 5,000 and develops the VW.OS operating system.


  • Rare Apple 1 Computer Built by Steve Jobs and Wozniak On Sale For $1.5 Million On eBay .

The original 1976 design rare Apple-1 computer, created by Steve Jobs along with another Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, has gone up for auction on eBay at an asking price of $1.5 million. According to the eBay listing and the unit’s Apple-1 Registry page, this Apple-1 computer is one of only six to have an original Byte Shop KOA wood case. The computer is moreover in working condition which makes it even rarer. The seller is additionally including an original Sony TV-115 monitor with a video modulator.


 The eBay listing also points out that this particular model is one of the first 50 units that were built by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. The only parts that have been replaced are the necessary video connectors in order for it to work. The owner of the computers claims that he bagged the rare computer in 1974 via a trade-in option for a new Apple II in Montreal, Canada. Apple 1 was the first product to be released by the company in 1975 and was put on sale for $666.66 at the time.


  • iOS14.5 To Allow iPhone Users with Face Id to Unlock Phones While Wearing A Mask Using Apple Watch.

Apple is making it easier for iPhone users to unlock their handsets via Face ID even while wearing a mask. The feature, however, requires an Apple Watch that can quickly unlock the connected iPhone even when the user is wearing a mask. Quoting the first iOS 14.5 developer beta, users need to manually enable the Apple Watch unlocking feature on their iPhone by going to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. A toggle available there, called Apple Watch, can be flipped to enable unlocking through an Apple Watch.


Once this feature is enabled, you'll be able to unlock your iPhone via Face ID by simply looking at its screen while wearing an Apple Watch. A haptic feedback notification will arrive on your Apple Watch to inform you about the unlocking. You'll also gain the option called Lock iPhone to lock your iPhone directly from the same notification. It is also necessary to bear in mind that some features that ask for Face ID, such as approving an App Store purchase, aren't likely to work with the Apple Watch unlocking for security reasons. Alongside the new unlocking, iOS 14.5 developer beta introduces support for Xbox Series S/ X and PlayStation 5 controllers. While the full release won't arrive for some time. However, given the developer beta release, we can expect its public beta arrival in the upcoming days.


  • Google Meet Rolled Out Green Room Feature That Will Give Users Quick Preview of Settings Before Joining A Meeting.

Google Meet is rolling out Green Room, a feature that will offer users a “quick preview” on how they will appear to others before entering a Google Meet video call. This means that the lighting, distance from the camera, audio as well as echo can be checked. With this feature, the video-conferencing platform aims to provide users a heads up on their settings. Google notes that there is no end-user setting for the green room feature. According to the company, when a user starts or prepares to join a meeting, a small button will appear in the usual “Ready to join?” window.  


The user then should click the "Check your audio and video" button that will appear before entering a meeting. Once they click on the button, it will open a “green room,” where users can preview their audio and video. After users have evaluated the quality of the devices, they can click on the ‘Next’ button to confirm the settings. Google has started rolling out the green room feature and it will be available to all users within 15 days of the rollout. Green Room will be available to Google Workspace Essentials, G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, and Nonprofit's customers.
