- Australian Corporations Hit by Massive Microsoft Server Hack.
The Australian Cyber Security Watchdog has strongly warned Australian companies using Microsoft Exchange products to urgently patch their software after it has been compromised by hackers. Microsoft Exchange Server possesses millions of corporate emails, calendars, and rostering products, and if hacked entire email inboxes could be wiped as well as stolen. The Australian Signals Directorate's Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) today confirmed Australian organisations – thought to be over 7000 servers locally - had been affected by the hack. The hack has affected Microsoft Exchange servers around the world.
Ladislav Zezula, the malware analyst at antivirus company Avast, said “There is a vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange email and calendar servers that pose a potential threat to organizations using the solution.” “If this vulnerability is exploited by cyber attackers, it could result in the computer being deleted, ransomware or backdoors installed, and all email addresses and messages stolen and transmitted across the corporate network.” ."Running the malicious code under the SYSTEM account, the attacker can completely take over the computer," Mr. Zezula said. He explains hackers could leave no trace of their involvement but instead install "back doors" which would allow them to enter remotely at any time. Microsoft has published a blog post explaining to administrators how to patch the product to safeguard it from the hack.
- Google Will Cut 24% Tax from YouTube Content Creators from June 2021
Google has issued a new announcement that YouTube is set to start deducting taxes from creators outside of the US on the earnings they generate from viewers in the US. The new policy will begin as early as June 2021, the Google-owned company said in an email to creators. YouTube has also asked creators to submit their tax information in AdSense “to determine the correct amount of taxes to deduct”. The changes apply to all creators outside of the US, including the ones in India. However, there won't be any similar tax deduction for creators living in the US.
YouTube has informed creators about the update and has asked them to provide their tax information in their AdSense account as early as possible. If a creator isn't able to provide the information by May 31, the company said it might need to deduct up to 24 percent of their total earnings worldwide. as stated by the support page, "If you submit US tax info, withholding rates are between 0 percent and 30 percent on earnings that you generate from viewers in the US and depend on whether your country has a tax treaty relationship with the United States.” If the creator account classifies as a Business Account, the default withholding rate will be 30% and for an individual account, it will be 24% of the total earnings worldwide.
- Microsoft Is Ending Support for the Old Non-Chromium Edge
Microsoft has announced the end of support for the classic non-chromium Edge Legacy browser. Legacy Edge was built as a replacement for Internet Explorer. The discontinuation is handled in a phased manner and said the browser will not only stop receiving security updates but will also be replaced by the new Chromium browser in April 2021. The Chromium Edge browser is vastly more capable compared to the Legacy Edge browser it replaces. The process of removing and replacing will happen automatically, whether the user wants it or not.
In the past, Microsoft Edge became the moral successor to Internet Explorer; making it the default browser in Windows 10. In January 2020, the release of the new Microsoft Edge based on the Chromium engine took place. Now, the old Microsoft Edge has received the latest update and there will be no more updates for it. Microsoft has also started testing the Chromium Edge browser for Xbox. If somehow, Chromium Edge is not installed one can download it directly from Microsoft’s website.
