  • ISRO Developed Radar for Joint Earth Observation Satellite Mission With NASA

ISRO has completed the development of a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) capable of producing extremely high-resolution images for a joint earth observation satellite mission with the US space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) represents a joint collaboration for a dual-frequency L and S-band SAR for earth observation. NASA and Bengaluru-headquartered Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) signed a partnership on September 30, 2014, to collaborate on and launch NISAR. The mission is targeted to launch in early 2022 from ISRO's Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, about 100 km north of Chennai. NASA is providing the mission's L-band SAR, a high-rate communication subsystem for science data, GPS receivers, a solid-state recorder, and payload data subsystem.

ISRO is providing the spacecraft bus, the S-band radar, the launch vehicle, and associated launch services for the mission, whose goal is to produce global measurements of the causes and consequences of land surface changes using advanced radar imaging. The S-band SAR payload of the NISAR satellite mission was flagged off by the Secretary in the Department of Space and ISRO Chairman K Sivan on March 4 through the virtual mode. The payload has been shipped from ISRO's Ahmedabad-based Space Applications Centre (SAC) to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at Pasadena in the US for integration with the latter's L-band SAR payload, an ISRO statement said.

  • Truecaller Shutting Down UPI Services in India
Caller ID application Truecaller has suspended its services on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to focus on core offerings like communication and safety, a company spokesperson said. The app has operated the payment service under Truecaller Pay for the last four years. However, while it will not include new UPI users, the company could integrate Truecaller Pay with other UPI partners on its app. At its peak in mid-2020, Truecaller Pay had close to 20 million registered UPI users. It offered services like bill payments through its banking partners ICICI Bank and Bank of Baroda.

Truecaller said the discontinuation of the UPI service wouldn't have any impact on its lending operations. The platform will continue distributing credit through partnerships with its partner non-banking financial companies. At present, Truecaller has over 200 million monthly active users in India, with around 120,000 premium customers. The company claimed it informed the users of its decision two weeks ago. “As per guidance from regulators, we gave two weeks’ notice to users," the spokesperson said.
