Tech giant Google Inc. said it will support one million rural women entrepreneurs in India to aid them to further their ambitions and improve their livelihoods. Google will implement this through the ‘Women Will’ web platform launched at the virtual Google for India event on 8 March, International Women’s Day. Available in English and Hindi, the Women Will platform is designed for women aspiring to explore entrepreneurship. Initially, Google will work with 2,000 ‘Internet Saathis’ to support other women with this resource to set out on their entrepreneurial journey.

  • AI Can Now Learn What Faces You Find Attractive Directly from Your Brain Waves

An artificial intelligence system has been developed that can dive into your mind and learn which faces and types of visage you find most attractive. Finnish researchers wanted to find out whether a computer could identify facial features we find attractive without any verbal or written input guiding it. In the new study, researchers used electroencephalography (EEG) measurements to identify what kind of facial features people found to be attractive. And then fed the results to an artificial intelligence (AI) program. The machine learning system – termed a generative adversarial neural network (GAN) – was first able to familiarize itself with what sorts of faces individual people found desirable, and then fabricate completely new ones specifically designed to please.

The team strapped 30 volunteers to an electroencephalography (EEG) monitor that tracks brain waves. Next showed them images of 'fake' faces generated from 200,000 real images of celebrities stitched together in diverse ways. They didn't have to arrange anything — no swiping right on the ones they like — as the team could learn their 'unconscious preference' through their EEG readings. They then fed that data into an AI which learned the preferences from the brain waves and generated whole new images tailored to the individual volunteer. In the future, the results and the technique could be used to influence preferences or gain an understanding of unconscious attitudes people may not speak openly about, including race, religion and politics, the team explained.
