  • Google’s Two-factor Authentication Prompt Now Has Dark Mode.

Google is rolling out a new update for its two-factor authentication prompt on Android, which adds support for the dark mode. Google’s new dark mode is unavailable to all users as of now. For instance, it is available for personal accounts for some. It’s unavailable to users with the Google Workspace Suite. Apart from the dark mode, Google has made a few subtle changes to the prompt screen as well. The new prompt screen has the Google logo at the top center followed by the message “Is it you trying to sign in?”

In addition to the less blinding hue, the new update also features a couple of other minor cosmetic changes, including Google’s custom Google Sans font for the UI, and colorful red and green icons on the log-in buttons. The new update appears to be rolling out slowly for Android owners. “We’re always testing new ways to improve our experience for our users, but don’t have anything specific to announce right now,” a Google spokesperson said.

  • France Fined Google 1.1 Million Euros Over Misleading Hotel Rankings Practices.

Google Ireland and Google France have agreed to pay a 1.1 million euros ($1.34 million) fine after a probe found that Google’s hotel rankings could be misleading for consumers, France’s finance ministry and fraud watchdog said on Monday. And this is not the only fine Google is set to pay. The company has agreed to pay $76 million over three years to a group of 121 French news publishers to end a more than year-long copyright spat Earlier, Google used information from official source 'Atout France' and the hotel industry website to give hotels a ranking of one to five stars.

The agreement between Google and the Alliance de la presse d'information generale (APIG), a lobby group representing most major French publishers, was announced previously, but financial terms had been undisclosed. The move infuriated many other French outlets, which deemed it unfair and opaque. Publishers in other countries will scrutinise the French agreement, the highest-profile in the world under Google's new program to provide compensation for news snippets used in search results. The accord follows France's implementation of the first copyright rule enacted under a recent European Union law that develops "neighbouring rights," requiring large tech platforms to open talks with publishers seeking remuneration for use of news content.
