  • NASA assigns 2 astronauts to SpaceX Crew-4 mission to ISS.

NASA has assigned two crew members to its SpaceX Crew-4 mission, the fourth crew rotation flight of the Crew Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station. NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren and Bob Hines will serve as spacecraft commander and pilot, respectively, for the Crew-4 mission, the US space agency said on Saturday, adding that additional crew members will be assigned as mission specialists in the future by the agency's international partners. The mission is expected to be launched in 2022 on a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Lindgren, Hines, and the international crew members will join an expedition crew aboard the space station for a long-duration stay. Before being selected as an astronaut in 2009, Lindgren was a flight surgeon supporting space shuttle and space station missions. In December 2020, NASA named him as one of the Artemis Team of astronauts helping to pave the way for NASA's upcoming lunar missions. Hines, a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force, was selected as an astronaut in 2017 and will be undertaking his first trip into space. NASA's Commercial Crew Program is working with the American aerospace industry as companies develop and operate a new generation of spacecraft and launch systems capable of carrying crews to low-Earth orbit and the space station. As commercial companies focus on providing human space transportation services and developing a robust low-Earth orbit economy, NASA is free to focus on building spacecraft and rockets for deep space missions to the Moon and Mars.

The Hope spacecraft commissioned by the United Arab Emirates has captured incredible images of Mars released on Sunday. The picture "captured the largest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons, emerging into the early morning sunlight," it said in a statement. The image was captured from an altitude of 24,700 kilometers (15,300 miles) above the Martian surface on Wednesday, a day after the probe entered Mars' orbit, it said in a statement. Hope became the first of three spacecraft to arrive at the Red Planet this month after China and the US also launched missions in July, taking advantage of a period when the Earth and Mars are nearest.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, UAE prime minister and Dubai's ruler, shared the coloured image on Twitter. Alongside the glorious image, he tweeted: "The transmission of the Hope Probe's first image of Mars is a defining moment in our history and marks the UAE joining advanced nations involved in space exploration. We hope this mission will lead to discoveries about Mars which will benefit humanity." The UAE's venture is also timed to mark the 50th anniversary of the unification of the nation's seven emirates. "Hope" will orbit the Red Planet for at least one Martian year, or 687 days, using three scientific instruments to monitor the Martian atmosphere.
