- Sandes Is the Indian Alternative to WhatsApp Made by The Government of India
An Indian alternative of the messaging service WhatsApp named ‘Sandes’ is currently being tested by government officials in India. The app is ready and is being tested by ministry officials. The use of ‘Sandes’ app is currently restricted to government officials only. The 'Sandes' app provides all the features that any instant messaging application would provide. Users can use features like voice and data. The National Informatics Centre, a branch under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology handles the backend of the Sandes Application. As per reports, 'Sandes' is available for both iOS and Android platforms.
Last month, the Indian government had asked the instant messaging platform to withdraw recent controversial changes it introduced to its terms of service and privacy policy, expressing 'grave concern' over implications for Indian citizens. WhatsApp has delayed the introduction of the new privacy policy to 15 May from 8 February. It restated that neither it nor Facebook can see personal conversations and that they are safe and protected by end-to-end encryption. Although there is no information regarding the rollout of the app in India if you go to the gims.gov.in page, you will notice it says 'Sandes'.
- 5G Trials in India Could Start in the Next 2-3 Months .
The DoT (Department of Telecommunication) has reportedly informed the parliamentary committee on IT about the sixteen requests it has received for 5G trials. 5G technology trials are likely to start in two-three months' time in the country, as per the department of telecommunications. The committee is all extremely eager for them to start, and even asked the DoT why the trials didn’t initiate earlier. It has also raised concerns about the 5G spectrum not being allocated to service providers until now.
The panel inquired the reasons for the delay considering TSPs submitted their applications for 5G trials in January. "The committee would like to know the reasons for the delay in issuing spectrum for 5G trials to TSPs," it said. The panel said the trials are a prerequisite to building the 5G ecosystem and DoT needs to consider the issues of the experimental spectrum and early handling of 5G trials more seriously. It said any further delay will sustain an adverse impact on building the 5G ecosystem in the country and will further delay the launch of 5G services. 5G use case labs are being set up by DoT in areas like education, healthcare, agriculture, fintech, and public safety.
